Tang Kwong San (b.1992) was born in China and moved to Hong Kong during his childhood. He graduated with a Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) from RMIT University, Australia (joint degree with Hong Kong Art School) in 2019. Tang’s artistic practice pivots around combining photographs, drawings, objects and videos that trace intergenerational family memories and social history. Through the motions of reorganising and reinterpreting old belongings, family photo albums and a plethora of documents in various media, Tang accomplishes an anachronistic aesthetic way of presentation. In doing so, it is Tang’s attempt to divulge the subtle, intricate and complex connections between the emotions of loss and a sense of longing.
Tang has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and London. In the final year of his BA degree, Tang’s work was selected to be shown in numerous institutions such as Hidden Space, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, Tai Kwun, Hong Kong Art Centre and Hong Kong City Hall. Tang also received the Fresh Trend Contemporary by Angela Li Award 2019, Human Rights Art Prize 2020 and the WMA Masters Photography Award 2019/20.
Tang Kwong San holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, co-presented by The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University Australia and Hong Kong Art School. He has earned other outstanding awards, among others, the Mr. Jerry Kwan Memorial Scholarship (2018/2019), Hidden Space Award (2018/2019), Hong Kong Art School Higher Diploma in Painting Best Artwork (Painting) (2016), the HKSAR Education Bureau Outstanding Performance Scholarship (2015/2016), and the Hong Kong Designers Association Designer Student of the Year (2014).
