Contemporary by Angela Li is delighted to participate in UNSCHEDULED, an art exhibition organised by Hong Kong Art Gallery Association (HKAGA). UNSCHEDULED will take place from 17 to 27 June 2020 at Tai Kwun, the venue partner. The participating galleries are selected by an independent selection team, including Kwok Ying, curator of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, and Sara Wong, a well-respected artist from Hong Kong. Contemporary by Angela Li will present a solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Ng Chung, showcasing Ng’s signature bottle paintings and a series of abstract and still-life oil works. UNSCHEDULED opens on 17th June 2020 at Tai Kwun Duplex Studio. Contemporary by Angela Li is located at booth D02 on LG2/F.
Bottle paintings are from an iconic series of Ng Chung. He has been painting wine bottles for more than two decades from his studio situated in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong. Bottles have become his recurring objects of his paintings because of his sentiment for alcohol, and have also transformed into a ‘symbol’ for expression and the painting process as a journey in search of the artist’s personal identity. Dr. Yang Xiao-yan, Head of Department of Journalism at Sun Yat-sen University and a renowned art critic, described Ng Chung’s bottles as “a projected ‘image’ of the meaning of self that defines his own identity. […] his paintings become the basis to illustrate the compound visual concept of ‘image/symbol/wine bottles’, and the only way to prove the worth of individual existence. His experience and his paintings are profound implications of the tension between the society of Hong Kong and himself.”
This exhibition will also showcase Ng Chung’s latest abstract and floral still-life oil paintings. In his abstract paintings, the artist attempts to visually express his self-conscious emotions on the canvases through luscious colours and boorish texture. On the contrary, his floral still-life paintings employ a careful balance of subdued colours and tones. The paintings are deceptively simple and discreet, evoking a sense of loneliness and pensiveness.
About UNSCHEDULED
In light of the cancellation of the March art week, UNSCHEDULED strives to re-energise Hong Kong’s art scene. Neither a traditional art fair, nor a museum exhibition, UNSCHEDULED is a platform for selling and networking that will present solo exhibitions from HKAGA gallery members, with a focus on modern and contemporary art that has a connection to Asia. Upholding Hong Kong’s unique place as the art centre in Asia, UNSCHEDULED’s scope is rooted in a commitment to creativity emerging from the continent.
The participating galleries were selected by an independent selection team comprised of established and internationally respected Hong Kong-based curators and artists, including Ying Kwok and Sara Wong. The organising committee is spearheaded by Willem Molesworth (de Sarthe) and Fabio Rossi (Rossi & Rossi) as HKAGA board members.
A proportion of the proceeds of ticket sales will be given the participating galleries and also local charity partner Hands On Hong Kong to support the relief efforts of those most affected by the impact of COVID-19.
