Fabrication
Shi does not seek to make empty things solid, but solid things empty. He is interested in both shadows and light. He has noticed that the shadows cast by his works (which are in a sense shadows of the original object) at times themselves appear solid. He has in mind an installation that will involve suspending these wire forms in a room and using tightly focused lights to cast multiple shadows onto the floor, ceiling, and walls that can't be distinguished from the real. His work may employ illusion, but it is wholly concerned with life and reality, the spirit of the past and the promise of the future.
